Many Community Hubs and Community Centres are run entirely or nearly all by volunteers. It is our hope that we can recruit a strong and dedicated team of volunteers to help us run the SCH, alongside our full-time Project Manager. If you were to become a volunteer with us you would be able to gain new skills, meet new people, help the Hub to be self-sufficient, and possibly most importantly, allow us to keep giving something back to the community.
Yes you can, although you're perfectly welcome to keep it light-touch and just come in as a volunteer. The advantage of volunteering is that you can see what the Hub does at first hand. This will increase your understanding if you come to make decisions as either a Member or a Trustee.
The roles of a volunteer are varied as managing the Hub has a lot of facets. And don't worry – if you really don't fancy a particular role, or conversely if you've always wanted to try this or that, just tell us. It's important to us that we match volunteers up with the jobs they'd feel happy and comfortable doing.
If you're a people person you could answer the phone or check our emails or incoming booking requests. Maybe you'll have people to call about their booking, or follow up any other contact that people or other agencies have made. Maybe you could take some photos and keep our social media updated, or if you love to meet people then welcome them into the building or take their queries in person.
Maybe you would be able to set up rooms for incoming bookings by getting the tables and chairs in the right places, making sure we had enough tea, coffee and milk, and helping our bookers bring their stuff in from their cars (and vice versa). And if you're good at thinking on your feet that's great as unexpected things will more than likely crop up, from needing to mop the floor to Ewan McGregor turning up unannounced.
If you are super confident and have a very trustable head on your shoulders, you could have a few hours in charge, or open up in the morning or close the Hub in the evening. Obviously we'd give you keys and tell you the alarm codes and give you all the training you need, but doing this is great for self-confidence and looks awesome on a CV, as well as standing you in a great place for a reference.
Once our cafe is running, it's likely we will need volunteers to help out, under proper qualified supervision. Can you make the best soup in Coupar Angus? Can you grind beans and make a great espresso? Do you love a bit of chat with our cafe customers? Maybe some cafe volunteering is for you.
Come in and speak to one of the staff, give us a call or email us and we can discuss what you'd like to do and when you could do it. Whether you are looking for a step up to something else, or want to fill a quiet part of your day or evening, volunteering at the SCH will totally reward you for your efforts.
